Another lesson from White Cat
You
may or may not remember White Cat, whom I spoke about earlier in the
year. He is a battle- scarred stray who started hanging about our
garden and looking hungry, and I ended up feeding him, but not wanting
him to get too close as he fought with our own cats.
I spent
some time worrying about what to do with him - he was too old and
grumpy to be re-housed, and I didn't like to think of him outside as
winter came on. He'd often disappear for days on end and I wondered
what dilapidated shed he might be huddling in.
It turned out
that he wasn't huddled in a shed after all, but was inside a warm house
several doors down the street. They'd been feeding him for some time,
and he'd been coming round to us for extra strokes and seconds. While I
was worrying, White Cat was deciding where he should go for dinner
tonight.
A part of me wasn't surprised at this turn of events. I
often assume responsibility for weakness in other people, and
underestimate their ability to look after themselves. Thanks White Cat,
duly noted!

People travel to wonder

courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular
motion of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering. St
